About this opportunity

Awarded to a student entering 3rd or 4th year in the Foods and Nutrition Program in good academic standing, who displays an aptitude for, and interest in the food component of the program and has concern for women's studies and respect for diversity. In memory of Estelle Reddin, and her contributions to home economics and women's equality, the PEI Home Economics Association established the J. Estelle Reddin Memorial Award at UPEI in 2011. Estelle Reddin (1923-2010) was a founding member of the Association, a beloved professor, a mentor and an individual who worked tirelessly to improve the welfare of families and women in the community. She worked as a dietitian and a home economics teacher before joining the faculty of the UPEI Home Economics Department. She challenged her students to explore new avenues of learning and encouraged them to be critical thinkers. She was instrumental in course development within the department with a special focus on food and food commodity groups. She was largely responsible for the establishment of the first courses in Women's Studies at UPEI. Estelle was also a founding member of the PEI Dietetic Association. Her support for community efforts, particularly those that enabled or assisted women, was unprecedented.
