The scholarship was established from a bequest from Jack Wynnegate McGill's estate, who died in 1974 and wished to help fund advanced music study overseas. Awarded annually, the scholarship is given to outstanding young New Zealand musicians. The scholarship is administered by Public Trust and Creative New Zealand. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens aged 20 years or older who hold specific qualifications including a degree or diploma in music from a New Zealand university, a Licentiate of Trinity College London, or a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music.
