James Madison Fellowship

The James Madison Fellowship provides financial support to teachers or prospective teachers of American history, American government, or civics classes where they will teach topics on the Constitution at the secondary school level (grades 7-12). The fellowship supports graduate study leading to a master's degree in American history, political science, government, or related fields with substantial constitutional coursework. The program includes a mandatory four-week Summer Institute on the Constitution in Washington, D.C., taught by constitutional scholars. Fellows compete only against other applicants from their state of legal residence, and after receiving their master's degree, must teach American history, American government, or civics in grades 7-12 for one full year for each academic year of funding received. The Foundation offers two types of fellowships: Junior Fellowships for college seniors and graduates without teaching experience, and Senior Fellowships for former or current teachers. The fellowship covers tuition, required fees, books, and room and board if required to live away from the principal residence.
