About this opportunity
The James Pon Memorial Award offers three prizes to students enrolled in post-secondary education programs (college or university) in Canada. The award is offered by the Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada (FCCRWC). Entrants must submit an essay about the history of Chinese people in Canada and their contributions to the construction of the railroad and to this country. Essays are judged on historical accuracy, demonstrated understanding of the contribution of the Chinese community to railroad construction in Canada, understanding of the historical treatment of the Chinese community by the Canadian community and government, and thoughts on why this history is important to remember. Winners are announced at the annual wreath laying ceremony at the Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial in Toronto on Canada Day, and the first place winning essay is read at this event.
