About this opportunity
The Jim and Barbara Milburn Scholarship in History was established through a bequest from the Estate of James Dalton Milburn, QSM, in 2022 by the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation. The scholarship recognizes the friendship and pleasurable times enjoyed during Jim and Barbara's student days between 1941-1951, echoing the vibrant student life of the immediate post-war years that included sports, debating, and lively student politics.
The scholarship provides financial support to students nearing completion of their first year who are continuing to second year at Victoria University of Wellington while studying History. It is specifically designed to assist students facing financial hardship. Jim and Barbara, who both participated extensively in university life—with Barbara earning blues in tennis and indoor basketball, and Jim involved in debating society, Plunket Medal, Union Prize and Student Executive—feel a debt to the 'College' which inspired their lifetime of teaching and publishing.
The award is valued at $5,000 (subject to funds available) and is tenable for one year. Recipients must be New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residents and will be selected by the University's Undergraduate Scholarship Committee in consultation with Student Finance. The funds are paid directly to the recipient in two equal instalments in Trimester 1 and Trimester 2.
