About This Opportunity

The Joan Millar Entrance Scholarship for Nursing Students is a bursary awarded to a student entering full-time Nursing at UPEI, with preference given to applicants with a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) designation or children of LPNs. This scholarship is established at the University of Prince Edward Island in memory and in honour of Joan Millar by her family. It will support students entering their first year in the UPEI School of Nursing program who are determined to fulfill the dream that Joan carried throughout her life. Joan Millar's dream of entering the nursing profession started as a young girl but she was unable to fulfill that aspiration due to financial realities. Her career spanned a variety of jobs, but her heart, time and energy were dedicated to her role as the wife of Harold Millar and mother of three children, Angela, Cheryl and Brian. As Joan held on to her dream of becoming a nurse, she worked as a resident care worker and then graduated from the Central School for Nursing Assistants in 1984 as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). She worked at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Tyne Valley as an LPN for 13 years. Joan Millar passed away on May 2, 1999 from terminal cancer.
