About This Opportunity

The John A Lamberton Research Scholarships provide financial assistance to PhD students undertaking research in areas related to Dr John A Lamberton's work, which focused on natural products, especially alkaloids, and on understanding the relationship between chemical structure and biological activity. Established in 2003 by donations totaling $1,000,000 from the widow of Dr John A Lamberton (1925-2002), the scholarship supports postgraduate researchers at the University of Sydney. Up to six scholarships may be awarded annually, either as a primary stipend scholarship equivalent to the University's Research Training Program rate ($41,753 per annum for up to 3.5 years) or as a supplementary scholarship providing $7,500 per annum for up to 3 years. The primary scholarship is designed to fully support PhD candidates during their research, while the supplementary scholarship provides additional funding to students who already hold another scholarship. Eligible candidates must be enrolled or have an unconditional offer in a full-time PhD program at the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine and Health, or Faculty of Science. Specific schools include Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Life and Environmental Sciences, Medical Sciences, Sydney Medical School, and Sydney Pharmacy School. Applicants must hold an honours degree (first class) or a master's degree with a substantial research component and must have applied for the Research Training Program stipend scholarship. Selection is based on academic merit, research proposal alignment with the scholarship's subject area, research output, supervisor assessment, and a personal statement demonstrating how the proposed project relates to natural products and chemical structure-biological activity relationships. The scholarship encourages completion within 3 years, with extensions available under certain circumstances.
