About this opportunity
Beginning in fall of 2021, the John Michael Campbell Memorial Award will be granted annually to a 2nd year student who is enrolled in an undergraduate program, is normally resident in Prince Edward Island, is in financial need and who may have been affected by a family member who has or had addiction challenges. Academic achievement will not be a defining factor. Preference will be given to a student who has a demonstrated interest in agriculture and bringing produce to market. Applicants will provide no more than one page outlining how they meet the criteria for this award.
This award was established in memory of Mike Campbell, who was born in Prince Edward Island and lived most of his life there. Mike struggled with addictions throughout his life, which greatly affected relations with those close to him. At the same time, he wanted to be someone who helped his friends when they needed help and he felt the need to watch out for the little guy. In his later years Mike took great pride in the produce from his gardens and friends usually left with lots of fresh vegetables. This award recognizes his belief in and need to help others when he could.
The award honors Mike's connection to rural life, his pride in his home and gardens, his independence and self-reliance, and his desire to help those in need. It provides financial support to students who have been impacted by family addiction challenges while pursuing their educational goals.
