About This Opportunity
Awarded to a student, upon recommendation from their high school principal(s), who graduated from a PEI French-language high school; based on good academic standing and not already on scholarship of more than $1000. Preference is given to students entering the Business Administration program at UPEI. Born in 1913, John Tremblay was the youngest of thirteen in a St Louis, Prince Edward Island French Canadian family. Mr. Tremblay spoke only his native French language until he was fourteen years old. By working as a farm labourer, he learned English and saved enough to attend a commercial course at St. Dunstan's University in 1935. Though an award winner in several courses, he was unable to afford to return to University. John Tremblay became a very successful businessman in Halifax, a leader in the region in the introduction of innovative lighted signage and land development. Having always regretted that he was unable to attend University and complete his degree, John Tremblay established a bursary at UPEI, through a generous donation to UPEI, to assist students in similar circumstances to do what he was unable to. Mr. Tremblay died one year later in 1999.
