About this opportunity
The Joyce Family Foundation Renewable Awards are granted to students who are entering their first undergraduate degree program in any faculty at the University of Prince Edward Island and have overcome obstacles and adversity; are in the greatest financial need; are a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada; and are normally resident in Prince Edward Island and have graduated from a PEI high school within the last three years. These awards will be granted after consideration of any government or other funding to which the recipient is allotted. Preference will be given to those who have no other avenues of funding or support in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Pending successful completion of the first year of study, these awards will be renewable for recipients' second, third, and fourth years of study, totalling a maximum of four years. Ron V. Joyce is best known as the legendary Canadian behind the incredible success of the Tim Hortons franchise. He stood with a strong work ethic and business acumen, and his passion for the Tim Hortons empire and helping young Canadians succeed was palpable. He passed away in 2019 but his legacy will live on through the thousands of young people he employed and supports in their post-secondary dreams through his Foundation. The Joyce Family Foundation is a private, family foundation created by Ronald V. Joyce (1930-2019). His philanthropy reflects a deep-rooted sense of responsibility to give back to his community. The Trustees carry out Mr. Joyce's vision in his memory. Through its strategic philanthropic work, the Joyce Family Foundation seeks to build a legacy for the future through ongoing leadership and innovative partnerships, by promoting improved and meaningful social, economic and emotional engagement for young Canadians. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting these young Canadians and empowering them to develop into healthy, confident, and independent contributors to Canada's society. In July of 2020, the Joyce Family Foundation decided to provide an extraordinarily generous gift in support of students entering the University of Prince Edward Island. The intent of the Foundation is to provide a transformational opportunity to students that face significant financial barriers and have demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles and adversity.
