About this opportunity
Awarded at the end of the third year to a student in Nursing who demonstrates a particular clinical competence in working with the elderly. The Judith Smitheram Doherty Scholarship was established at the University of Prince Edward Island in 1994 in memory of a young woman who grew up with a steadfast determination to become a nurse. As one suffering from a celiac condition all her life, Judith understood the meaning of illness and wanted to bring hope and relief to others. She became a practicing nurse in Hamilton following graduation from the School of Nursing in Timmins, Ontario (1966). After a few years in pediatrics, she found her true niche in caring for the elderly. After twenty-two years of nursing, she retired early in failing health and died at the age of forty-nine in 1992. The scholarship is given to a student at the end of 3rd year of the Nursing program who demonstrates commitment, dedication, and desire to pursue a Nursing career as well as a particular clinical competence in working with the elderly.
