About this opportunity
The Kathryn Lodge Mhatre Creative Writing Scholarship was established in memory of Kathryn Lodge Mhatre, a passionate writer and lifelong learner who earned degrees in Mathematics and Creative Writing and tragically passed away in 2023. This scholarship honors her love of writing, compassion for others, and commitment to education.
The scholarship supports students from Chelan or Douglas County in Washington State who are pursuing creative writing in any form, including novels, poetry, journalism, and other literary endeavors. Applicants must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate their commitment to the craft of writing.
Established by Kathryn's parents through the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, this scholarship recognizes her legacy as a writer who kept journals from an early age and was working toward completing a novel for her master's thesis at the time of her death. The scholarship embodies her empathy, creativity, and dedication to learning.
The application requires students to describe their area of writing interest and submit an original writing sample. The scholarship is open to graduating high school students and beyond from public, private, or homeschooled backgrounds in the eligible counties.
