Kress Fellowships

The Kress Fellowships are offered by Middlebury Language Schools through a generous gift from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. These fellowships are designed for graduate students in European art history or art conservation who wish to study at the Middlebury Language Schools. The fellowships cover the comprehensive fee including tuition, on-campus housing, and food to attend programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. Five merit-based fellowships are awarded annually to exceptionally qualified individuals. Preference is given to graduate students who have recently been accepted or are currently enrolled in a corresponding program at a Ph.D. granting institution in the United States. In exceptional cases, advanced undergraduates in Art History preparing for graduate study may also be considered. The fellowship enables recipients to develop essential language skills for conducting research on European art, with the immersion format allowing rapid progress in speaking, listening, and reading abilities.
