About this opportunity
The Lightbown Family Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for students from Allegheny County pursuing a career in education. This scholarship honors Corinne Elsie Lightbown, an English teacher for 34 years with Mt. Lebanon High School who also taught in London, England, and Japan. A firm believer in the value of a good education, she established this scholarship fund to support students in their academic studies and continue her legacy of mentorship beyond her lifetime.
The scholarship is available to high school graduating seniors or undergraduate students residing in Allegheny County, PA who are pursuing a degree or studies in education. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Preference is given to applicants who have faced social, economic, or educational barriers due to systemic gender inequity.
This is a single-year award, though previous recipients are encouraged to re-apply in consecutive years. The scholarship reflects Corinne Lightbown's dedication to education and her belief that her students became part of her extended family, many of whom remained in touch with her and considered her a mentor and friend throughout the years.
