About this opportunity
The Mandela Scholarships are merit-based scholarships awarded to exceptional students from across Africa who are ready to lead, build, and contribute to the continent's future. Rooted in Nelson Mandela's values, these scholarships recognise students who combine academic excellence with initiative, leadership, and purpose. The scholarships provide tuition support for the duration of the programme (typically 3-4 years, depending on the programme of study) at African Leadership University.
Approximately 20 scholarships will be awarded for the September and October 2026 intakes. The scholarships primarily cover tuition only, ranging from USD 3,000 to USD 5,000 per year depending on the campus and programme. Students are responsible for accommodation, meals, laptops, insurance, transport, and other living expenses.
The scholarships are highly competitive and intended for top academic performers (A-students or equivalent) who demonstrate leadership roles, entrepreneurial thinking, creativity, integrity, resilience, and a drive to solve real problems. Some donor-funded scholarship variants include the Dolika Banda Scholarship for female students from Zambia and Dry Creek Foundation Scholarships for students interested in conservation.
Successful candidates are motivated to use their education to create meaningful impact in Africa and reflect Nelson Mandela's values of leadership and service.
