About this opportunity
This bursary is awarded to a single parent, preferably in Education, who is in financial need. Applicants must be in good academic standing. The bursary was established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Cathy and Frank Gillan in memory of Marion Gillan, Frank's mother. Marion Gillan was a dedicated teacher who believed nothing was more important than getting an education. Despite facing numerous challenges, including becoming a widow with five children, she continued teaching and helping hundreds of Charlottetown children learn. She had great compassion for students less fortunate and often stretched her own income to provide for those in need. Marion pioneered inclusive education in the 1970s and was a powerful positive force in education in Prince Edward Island. This award honors her memory and aims to perpetuate her love of education by supporting single parents pursuing their educational goals.
