The Mary Elizabeth Betts Beattey Scholarship honors Mary Elizabeth Betts Beattey, who pursued her dream of a college education at age 50 after her husband's death, graduating cum laude from Ohio University. For two decades, she taught fifth grade, focusing on students who needed special attention and encouragement to excel academically. This scholarship supports students who have demonstrated improvement and motivation throughout their high school career. The award provides $5,000 distributed over four years in increasing percentages (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%) to support students attending public, state-supported four-year colleges or universities in Ohio. Candidates must show steadily increasing GPA since freshman year, maintain a GPA between 3.2 and 3.8, and have attended Newark High School for four years.
