About This Opportunity

The Miriama Evans Memorial Scholarship is for students who are studying at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and are registered beneficiaries of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga. The scholarship honours the late Miriama Evans, a former graduate, lecturer, Council Member, and Hunter Fellow of Victoria University of Wellington who dedicated her life to te ao Māori in the public service and the arts. Miriama battled for the interests of Māori, especially Māori women, and was actively committed to her iwi, Ngāti Mutunga. Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga and Victoria University of Wellington established this scholarship to acknowledge Miriama's service to Ngāti Mutunga and the University, as well as her belief in the value of higher education for Ngāti Mutunga and Māori development generally. The scholarship recognises characteristics that Miriama exemplified, including leadership, vision, creativity, loyalty, and above all, service. Applicants can be studying at any level and any subject area, provided they are enrolled full-time. The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and the personal statement. Recipients are expected to provide a brief personal statement introducing themselves to Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga, describing their commitment to the iwi and te ao Māori now or in the future, and reflecting on some of the characteristics that defined Miriama Evans.
