About this opportunity

The MRC New Investigator Research Grant provides funding for researchers who are ready to take the next step towards becoming independent investigators. This opportunity supports exciting and ambitious research within the Medical Research Council's remit, aimed at transforming understanding of human health and disease through discovery and early translational research. The grant is designed to drive insights into causes and mechanisms of disease, accelerate diagnosis, advance treatment, and prevent human illness. Applicants must demonstrate skills and experience indicating readiness to 'transition to independence' and have support from an eligible host research organisation. The grant supports a research project combined with other academic or clinical activities during the transition to independence, such as clinical duties, teaching, or time spent on other research grants. This is distinct from a fellowship that supports 100% of the fellow's time. MRC will fund 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) and 100% of exceptions. There is no upper limit to the funding amount, though requests must be appropriate to the project and justifiable. Funding is available for up to five years, covering up to 50% of the applicant's salary along with costs for research staff, consumables, equipment, travel, and other research-related expenses.
