About this opportunity

The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA's missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology. This specific opportunity focuses on applying multi-constituent chemical data assimilation to atmospheric composition data from multiple NASA satellites including Aura, Terra, Aqua, Suomi-NPP, and Sentinel-5P. The research aims to understand processes that form ozone and aerosols and attribute changes in their concentrations to short- and long-term variations in human and natural activity at both regional and global scales. The project will provide enhanced understanding of multi-year changes in air pollutants and their response to changes in emission efficiency and human activity. The fellowship involves developing and applying the MOMO-Chem chemical data assimilation system to generate tropospheric chemistry reanalysis and quantify emission changes. By combining NASA datasets with advanced techniques such as machine learning, this project will provide crucial understanding relevant to NASA's Atmospheric Composition Focus Area's science questions about atmospheric composition changes and effects on regional air quality. The position is based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) under the advisement of Dr. Kazuyuki Miyazaki, focusing on long-term records of tropospheric composition to understand changes in air pollution and their impact on human health and climate.
