About This Opportunity

The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects. This specific opportunity focuses on stratospheric variability and its impacts on surface weather and climate. The research involves using the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) ModelE middle atmosphere climate model in concert with NASA reanalyses and remote sensing data to identify mechanisms and timescales by which the stratosphere influences surface climate and composition. Sample topics include stratospheric modulation of Arctic sea ice loss, Northern Hemisphere midlatitude circulation extremes, stratospheric sudden warmings and their relationship with ENSO, and interactions between the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation and tropical precipitation. The fellowship is designed to advance NASA's missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology. Research feeding back on model development is strongly encouraged.
