About this opportunity
The North American Society for Sport History (NASSH) invites submissions for its NASSH Dissertation Prize. The Dissertation Prize is awarded on an annual basis and recognizes outstanding doctoral dissertations in the field of sport history. The prize honors exceptional scholarly work by recent PhD graduates whose dissertations make significant contributions to the study of sport history.
Consistent with the scope of NASSH itself, any historical study of sport is eligible for consideration. Sport is broadly defined to include all aspects of competitive games, play, physical culture, and all other forms of physical activity. The prize is open to scholars regardless of national citizenship or the location of the university where they completed their degree.
Applicants must be current NASSH members at the time of submission and in the year the prize is awarded. For the 2026 award cycle, eligible dissertations are those submitted for the PhD degree between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. The winner receives a $1,000 prize in recognition of their outstanding scholarly achievement.
