NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award

The NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award is an affiliate-based recognition program established by the NCTE Secondary Section to celebrate and honor outstanding high school classroom teachers across the United States. This award recognizes teachers who demonstrate excellent practices and make significant contributions in the classroom. Each state, provincial, regional, or local NCTE affiliate annually determines one person in their affiliate to receive this honor. The award process begins at the affiliate level, where each affiliate selects their recipient in the manner of their choice—either by acknowledging a previous affiliate award winner to elevate their recognition to the national level, or by soliciting new applications and nominations. Recipients are recognized with a certificate at the prestigious Secondary Section Luncheon during the NCTE Annual Convention. The award highlights the exceptional work of high school English language arts teachers and provides national recognition for their dedication to education. Supporting materials for nominations must include the honoree's resume and signed letters of support from at least two different constituencies such as principals, supervisors, chairpersons, peers, parents, or students, documenting the teacher's contributions and excellent classroom practices. The award is unique in its structure as it works through NCTE's network of affiliates, ensuring that outstanding teachers from across different regions and communities receive recognition. Reserved seating is offered at the convention luncheon along with a booklet highlighting comments from the letters of recommendation, providing a meaningful and memorable recognition experience for the recipients.
