About this opportunity
The New Beginnings Bursary provides financial support to low-income students studying in qualified high-demand programs in sectors identified in Alberta's Recovery Plan that support Alberta labour market needs and industry demand. Up to 1,000 bursaries of $5,000 each are awarded annually. Recipients are selected from applications received for full-time student loans for the current loan year, with no separate application required.
Eligible students must be enrolled in specific high-demand programs at publicly funded post-secondary institutions in Alberta, including fields such as civil engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, nursing, and various technology programs. Students must be eligible for full-time student loan funding from Alberta Student Aid and have a family income from the previous tax year at or below the low income threshold.
Recipients are selected on a first-come, first-served basis from the pool of student loan borrowers who meet the eligibility criteria. An individual may receive a lifetime maximum of two bursaries. Preference is given to students attending a study period at least two semesters in length. Recipients may hold other scholarships and accept remunerative assignments depending on institutional policy.
