About This Opportunity

The Nora Bateson Scholarship was established through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation as a result of a bequest made by Mr Archie Dunningham, former City Librarian at Dunedin Public Library, to honor Miss Nora Bateson, who was Director of the New Zealand Library School from 1948-1953. The scholarship is intended to encourage beginning practitioners to include some form of overseas study or experience of professional practice in their programme rather than to support work for a research degree. The scholarship is offered to students currently enrolled in the Master of Information Studies (MIS), Postgraduate Certificate in Information Studies, or Postgraduate Diploma in Information Studies at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington. It supports students who wish to undertake a term of study or an internship in the field of Library and Information Studies at either a New Zealand or an overseas university or organisation. Preference is given to applicants who intend to study at an overseas university or organisation, as per the donors' original wishes. If no suitable overseas applicants are available, the panel will consider applicants intending to undertake study or internships in New Zealand. Preference may also be given to those without work experience in the GLAMR (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums & Records) sector. The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence, record of achievement in the programme, and commitment to the profession.
