About this opportunity
The North Queensland Bulk Ports Marine Science Scholarship is a partnership between James Cook University (JCU) and North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) designed to provide opportunities for high school students to study marine science at JCU. The scholarship is valued at approximately $15,000 over three years, with priority given to Indigenous applicants. The funding allows students to focus on their studies while working closely with JCU and NQBP staff as part of a mentorship program, potentially leading to a successful career in the ports sector.
The scholarship is open to domestic students who are commencing a Bachelor of Marine Science at JCU's Cairns or Townsville campus. Two scholarships are offered annually. Students of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage are highly encouraged to apply, especially those from the Hay Point/Mackay, Abbot Point, or Weipa regions. Female students are also strongly encouraged to apply.
In addition to the financial support, recipients will receive accommodation costs for NQBP work experience. The scholarship provides valuable industry connections and practical experience in the marine science and ports sector. Selection is based on academic merit or potential, character, demonstrated interest in marine science, and other criteria deemed appropriate by the selection committee.
Applications require submission of academic records, a character reference, curriculum vitae, and a written statement addressing specific criteria including motivation for studying marine science, career goals, relevant skills and experience, fitness for work requirements, and familial links to specific regional areas if applicable.
