About This Opportunity

The Professor John Cleverley Memorial Scholarship has been established to honour the memory of Professor John Cleverley and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are undertaking higher degree research in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. Professor Cleverley impacted many throughout his life, from his role as a school teacher to serving as Pro Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Sydney. Throughout his life, Professor Cleverley was committed to supporting opportunities for Indigenous Australians at the University of Sydney, managing the Aboriginal Teachers' Aides program for a decade until his retirement in 1993. The scholarship provides financial support valued at up to $5,800 to assist with research-related expenses such as travel, equipment, fieldwork, or any other costs associated with the degree. The exact value of the scholarship is determined by the selection committee and outlined in the successful recipient's offer letter. Recipients are selected based on academic merit, their area of study and/or research proposal, a personal statement addressing how the scholarship will support them in their studies, and a budget detailing how the funds will be used. This postgraduate research scholarship is specifically designed for currently enrolled master's by research or PhD students within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons. The scholarship value is paid as a one-off payment and is intended to help offset the various costs associated with conducting higher degree research. The scholarship emphasizes Professor Cleverley's legacy of supporting Indigenous Australian students in their educational pursuits.
