About This Opportunity

This project grant from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) aims to promote the development of methods for the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal experiments according to the 3R principle (replace, reduce, and refine). The grant provides researchers with the freedom to formulate their own research ideas, methods, and implementation to solve a defined research task within a limited time. The research must be of high scientific quality and must demonstrate relevance to at least one of the three Rs. Replace means replacing animal experiments with methods where animals are not used and that provide equivalent or better information. Reduce means using fewer animals in an experiment than previously possible to obtain a certain amount of information, or obtaining more information from the same animal without increasing suffering. Refine means minimizing pain or other suffering for laboratory animals and increasing welfare both before, during, and after experiments. The grant supports projects that develop methods with potential for widespread dissemination and uptake by the research community and/or industry.
