About this opportunity
The Quentin-Baxter Memorial Scholarship originates from donations made by staff, students, government departments and friends of Professor Quentin-Baxter, who held a Chair in the Law Faculty at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington at the time of his death. The scholarship provides monetary assistance to students undertaking study or research in the Faculty of Law at Victoria University of Wellington, and recognizes and encourages academic merit. The Fund also has discretionary monies for the relief of financial hardship.
This scholarship alternates annually between Māori and Pasifika law students. In even-numbered years, the scholarship is awarded to full-time students of Māori descent who are currently enrolled in one or more second year law courses and intend to complete an LLB at Victoria University of Wellington. In odd-numbered years, the scholarship is awarded to full-time Pasifika students with the same enrollment criteria.
Recipients receive $1,500 in their first year, and $1,000 in their second and third years respectively (up to $3,500 total over three years), provided the student achieves satisfactory academic progress as determined by the Faculty of Law. The selection committee considers financial need, personal qualities, academic ability, and the applicant's links with and likely contribution to their Māori and/or Pasifika community.
