About This Opportunity

The Rod McPherson Memorial Rural Scholarship was established following the tragic death of Rod McPherson in March 2022. Rod and his wife Jacqui had been extremely supportive of young farming cadets over 40 years in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Rod was a passionate farmer who championed those seeking to learn and improve animal welfare, environmental care, and farm production. This scholarship honors Rod's legacy as a lifelong learner and mentor who encouraged young people to pursue agricultural careers. Rod studied for a Diploma in Agriculture at Massey University, which prepared him for his farming career. He believed there was "room for improvement everyday" and hosted many international students to introduce them to New Zealand farming life. The scholarship is awarded annually to a young person from the Eastern Bay of Plenty pursuing tertiary-level study with the goal of a career in agriculture. It stands as a fitting tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on the farming community. Scholarship applications open on August 1st and close on August 30th each year.
