About this opportunity
This award is presented annually to a student who is entering second, third or fourth year of study at the University of Prince Edward Island. Recipients must demonstrate good academic standing, initiative and leadership in the classroom, with preference given to students who are 'first in family' to attend university. The scholarship was established in honour of Russell and Florence Diamond by their children (Wayne (UPEI Class of '75), Glenda, Beverly, (UPEI Class of '76), Lillian, Blaine and Juanita). Russell and Florence both left school early to assist in supporting their families and farmed after they were married. They were very committed to education for their children and served on the school board of their children's local school. They transmitted to their children the value of performing at each child's personal best in all endeavors, especially in academic pursuits. They worked to ensure their children were afforded the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education and excel in their chosen professions. The children of Russell and Florence created this award to honour their parents and their commitment to their children's education. Beginning in academic year 2011/12, this award was annually funded and given as a tribute to Russell and Florence Diamond, and the impact they had on their children and their belief and commitment to post-secondary education. In December 2015, the award was endowed and will be given in perpetuity.
