About this opportunity

This PhD studentship opportunity is offered by the University of Leeds in partnership with Invibio Limited, focusing on pre-clinical evaluation of a novel all-polymer knee replacement. The research aims to enhance understanding of the fundamental tribology of PEEK articulating against polyethylene and cartilage through systematic friction investigations. Students will study surface wettability effects on tribological behaviour compared to cobalt chrome. The project addresses challenges in Total Knee Replacement, where 25% of patients report problems during the first year after operation. The novel all-polymer knee replacement (PEEK-OPTIMA-on-polyethylene) developed by Invibio Limited aims to deliver innovation for musculoskeletal disease treatment and improved quality of life. Students will be based in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering at the School of Mechanical Engineering, working with Professor Louise Jennings and Dr Raelene Cowie as academic supervisors, with Dr Adam Briscoe from Invibio Ltd as industry co-supervisor. The studentship includes opportunities for industry placement, academic conference presentations, and public engagement activities.
