About this opportunity
This scholarship is offered by the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Kent for students pursuing an MSc by Research in Biochemistry. The scholarship provides a tuition fee waiver at the home rate for a one-year Master's by Research programme starting in September 2026. The research project focuses on 'Smart Gene Switches: Engineering Stimuli Responsive Genetic Circuits for Real-Time Cellular Sensing' under the supervision of Dr James Budge. The project explores how to harness and redesign natural cellular decision-making systems using stimuli responsive promoters to create programmable genetic circuits with real-world applications. Students will identify and engineer DNA and RNA based genetic switches that activate gene expression only in response to specific cellular stimuli such as oxidative stress, nutrient deprivation and cellular pH. The project provides hands-on training in mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and cell sorting, offering valuable preparation for careers in academia, biotech or the pharmaceutical industry.
