About this opportunity

This scholarship is offered by the University of Kent's School of Natural Sciences for students pursuing an MSc in Biochemistry. The scholarship provides a tuition fee and bench fee waiver at the postgraduate home rate. The associated research project, supervised by Dr James Budge, focuses on engineering stimuli-responsive genetic circuits for real-time cellular sensing. Students will identify and engineer DNA and RNA based genetic switches that activate gene expression in response to specific cellular stimuli such as oxidative stress, nutrient deprivation and cellular pH. The project provides hands-on training in mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and cell sorting. These engineered systems have applications in biosensors for drug screening, disease modelling, biotechnology, and could contribute to next-generation biotherapeutics including targeted DNA and RNA mediated therapies. The program prepares students for careers in academia, biotech, or the pharmaceutical industry.
