Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Defense Scholarship for Service Program

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. The program provides comprehensive financial support including annual cash stipends and full tuition coverage paid directly to the student's university. Scholars receive funding for the duration of their degree program and are required to complete at least one summer internship with a DoD facility (for multi-year scholars). The scholarship is designed to support students pursuing technical undergraduate or graduate degrees in one of 21 designated STEM disciplines. Upon graduation, scholars are required to accept post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense, working at one of their sponsoring facilities. This program combines educational funding with career development opportunities, providing students with hands-on experience at DoD facilities while completing their degrees.
