About this opportunity

The Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR) offers at least two research fellowships to scholars examining African diasporic, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian American, and/or Pacific Island history from 1776 to 1861. These fellowships further SHEAR's mission to foster research on the rich complexity and enduring significance of the early American republic. Fellowships may be used for research travel to archives and/or purchasing microfilm, books, or other research-related materials. Fellows receive $3,000 at the beginning of the fellowship for research expenses, and $1,000 support the following year to travel and present their research at the SHEAR annual conference. Scholars who are from underrepresented backgrounds, early in their careers (graduate students or recent post-graduates), and/or contingent faculty are strongly encouraged to apply. One of the fellowships has been named the James Brewer Stewart DEI Fellowship in honor of the past SHEAR president and lifelong advocate for social justice. Applications require a cover letter, CV, a one to two-page summary of the research project and plans, and a brief explanation of how the fellowship funds will be used, all submitted in a single file.
