About this opportunity
The Sidney Black Memorial Engineering Award is a £500 annual award given to inspire new female engineers to achieve their full potential. Named after Sidney Black who was driven by his passion for engineering throughout his life, this award recognizes a graduating female engineering student who has demonstrated a combination of academic achievement, personal attributes, or a contribution to society/student life. The award aims to allow female engineers' career dreams to take them wherever they desire, providing financial support and recognition for their accomplishments.
The award is offered to female students graduating from UHI who have passed their BEng on any of the university's engineering programmes. Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by others by submitting one or two paragraphs (no more than 500 words) explaining why they should win the award, which can include academic achievement, financial struggles, ambitious career aims, or requirement for start-up funding. The award has been given annually since 2021 and is donated in memory of Sidney Black, who served as a Petty Officer Radio Mechanic and worked as an engineer in various capacities throughout his lifetime until the age of 91.
