About this opportunity
The Sir Paul Callaghan Magnetic Resonance PhD Scholarship was established following the 2010 Prime Minister's Science Prize awarded to the Magnetic Resonance Innovation team led by Professor Sir Paul Callaghan. The team includes four of his former PhD students who have become internationally respected in their fields, working across science and engineering disciplines. Research from the team has been applied in medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), climate change research in Antarctica, and led to the formation of the high-tech New Zealand company Magritek Ltd.
The scholarship supports PhD research in the field of Magnetic Resonance Physics or Engineering, continuing the team's development of magnetic resonance methods and technologies with applications in agriculture and industry. The fund was established at Victoria University of Wellington with the prize money to support outstanding doctoral candidates in this specialized research area.
The scholarship provides $35,000 per year for three years (total $105,000), including a $26,000 annual stipend. One scholarship is funded at any time, and when filled, it will not be available again until the current scholar completes their studies. Recipients are expected to act as ambassadors for the university and participate in appropriate events or marketing activities.
