About this opportunity
Awarded to a Nursing student who is entering third year and who displays excellence in compassionate and holistic care of the total person and maintains a satisfactory academic record. Sister Avelina Smith, 1916-2000, was a Sister of St. Martha of Prince Edward Island who received her R.N. in 1940 from the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing. She became one of the pioneer group which transformed the former Albion Hotel of Alberton into the Western Hospital, the first general hospital for West Prince, PEI. Later she became supervisor on the surgical floor of the Charlottetown Hospital and in 1971 became a lecturer at the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing and at the P.E.I. School of Nursing until her retirement in 1981. Sister Avelina had a great zest for life, loved music, and was a joyous member of the Island Fiddlers. She was loved as a teacher and dearly missed by her students and the Sisters of the congregation.
