About This Opportunity

The SMART 18 Scholarship Program is a scholarship program developed by Sheet Metal Workers International Union Local No. 18 to support spouses or children of union members who intend to pursue further education in vocational or college programs. The program is managed by Scholarship America, the largest national designer and manager of scholarships and other educational support programs. The program offers two types of awards: nine $4,000 SMART Local 18 Awards and one $6,000 Essay Impact Award for the student who best answers the essay question. Awards are available for students who intend to attend full-time undergraduate studies at a recognized two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical institution. Although awards are not renewed automatically, students who satisfy the eligibility standards may apply each year. Recipients are selected based on academic history, demonstrated initiative and involvement in community and educational affairs, work experience, an essay, unusual family or life conditions, and an online recommendation. Financial need is not taken into account in the selection process.
