About This Opportunity

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative designed to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program provides full tuition and education-related fees, a cash award/stipend, book allowance, health insurance allowance, and guaranteed civilian employment with the Department of Defense upon graduation. The SMART Scholarship aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working in DoD laboratories and facilities by recruiting talented students committed to careers in national defense. The program creates opportunities in a wide range of STEM fields critical to the DoD mission, including aeronautical and astronautical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, cognitive science, computer science, electrical engineering, geosciences, industrial engineering, information sciences, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, nuclear engineering, oceanography, operations research, and physics.
