About this opportunity
The Society for Asian Music offers small grants to support research in Asian music. Grants of up to $4,000 are available for the period from May 2026 through May 2027. The program awards up to four small grants annually, with at least two grants dedicated to graduate students and at least one to independent scholars and/or contingent faculty who are otherwise ineligible for institutional research funding.
For graduate students, grants support doctoral research including fieldwork, pre-dissertation research, travel, language study, and other related activities, and may supplement other grants. For independent scholars and contingent faculty, grants support research leading toward scholarly publications including fieldwork, travel, language study, music lessons, and other related activities. The grants do not normally support conference travel/attendance or equipment purchases.
Grant proposals are evaluated on their project narrative including research objectives, project significance, research methodology, and itemized budget. Grantees are invited to make oral presentations of their research at the Society for Asian Music Annual Membership Meeting held in conjunction with the Society for Ethnomusicology annual conference. Grantees must acknowledge support from the Society for Asian Music Small Grants program in any papers, presentations, or publications resulting from this research.
