About this opportunity

The Stephen Lawrence Scholarship is a £19,070 cash bursary or fee waiver to study the Architecture Part 2 MArch course at the University of Greenwich commencing 2026/27. The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence, who grew up in South East London and wanted to become an architect before he was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack in 1993 at age 18. The scholarship is available for Black students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and/or Black students who are estranged or Care-experienced. The University of Greenwich partners with the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation to inspire a more equitable, inclusive society and foster opportunities for marginalized young people in the UK. This scholarship aims to remove barriers to education and work in architecture, addressing the significant disparity where only 1% of UK architects identify as Black. The scholarship is awarded over the duration of the two-year full-time course in three installments per year to assist applicants to pursue a career in architecture. Part-time students are eligible and will receive the award pro rata. Priority is given to Black students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (Index of Multiple Disadvantage quintiles 1 and 2, low household income) and/or Black students who are estranged or Care-experienced. Applicants must have UK nationality or residence status meeting the criteria to qualify for the postgraduate masters' loan, and must hold an offer to study for September 2026/27 on the Architecture Part 2 MArch course. One scholarship is currently available for 2026/7 entry, but the university is actively fundraising to offer more scholarships.
