TD Insurance Engineers PEI Indigenous Student Award

The TD Insurance Engineers PEI Indigenous Student Award is granted to an Indigenous student in any year of study in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering four-year program at the University of Prince Edward Island. Preference will be given to entrance students. If there are two or more equally qualifying students, the student in the greatest financial need will receive the award. Students may receive this award more than once. Engineers PEI, the business name for the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Prince Edward Island, have been supporting awards for UPEI students since 1994. Nine awards are currently supported by this membership, three of which are named after distinguished PEI engineers who were active and instrumental members in the Association of Professional Engineers. In September 2021, in the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommendations on PEI, and to encourage Indigenous students to enter the UPEI Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering program, Engineers PEI established this new award. The Association of Professional Engineers of Prince Edward Island was formed following the establishment of a PEI Branch of the Engineering Institute of Canada in 1952. The P.E.I. Engineering Profession Act was passed and given Royal assent on March 18, 1955. Until 2014, UPEI educated future engineers through a two year diploma program that required all graduates to continue their education at another institution to complete an engineering degree. In September 2014, the University of Prince Edward Island established the Sustainable Design Engineering Degree Program, a four year program, with Engineers PEI playing an active role in advising the university in the development of this degree program.
