About this opportunity
The Deas Thomson Minerology Scholarship in Postgraduate Research provides financial assistance to Masters by Research or PhD students undertaking research in mineralogy at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Science. This scholarship was established through a gift donated by Edward Deas Thomson to support postgraduate research students in the field of mineralogy.
The scholarship provides an annual stipend allowance equivalent to the University of Sydney Research Training Program (RTP) rate, which is indexed on 1 January each year. Recipients receive funding for up to three years, with the possibility of an extension for up to six months subject to satisfactory academic performance. The scholarship also covers student services and amenities fees for up to twelve research periods, with a potential extension of up to two research periods.
Applicants must be domestic or international students with an unconditional offer of admission or current enrollment in a full-time Masters by Research or PhD program at the Faculty of Science. They must be willing to conduct research into mineralogy and hold an honours degree (first class) or a master's degree with a substantial research component in a related field. Candidates must have applied and been assessed for the Research Training Program (RTP) at the University of Sydney but cannot hold an RTP, University of Sydney Postgraduate Award (UPA), or equivalent primary scholarship.
Selection is based on academic merit and previous research experience, including relevant professional experience, scholarly publications, and other relevant research output. The scholarship follows the Research Training Program (RTP) application process, and candidates are nominated by their relevant research supervisor(s). Note that this scholarship is not offered in 2025 but may be offered in 2026.
