About This Opportunity

The Dr Carl Richard Jackson Scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of Dr. Carl Richard Jackson MBBS 2007, by his parents, family and friends. The scholarship provides assistance to candidates for the degree Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Sydney to undertake an Elective Term in a developing country in the Asia-Pacific region, with a preference for Cambodia or other developing countries in Southeast Asia or the Pacific Islands. The scholarship is valued at $2,500 for a 4-week placement or $3,500 for an 8-week placement and is tenable for the Elective Term period only. It aims to enable medical students to gain meaningful clinical experience working with and treating local people in developing countries, with preference given to those completing placements in Cambodia and those spending part of their placement in rural settings. Applicants are selected based on a personal statement, curriculum vitae, references, and academic merit. Recipients must demonstrate a strong interest in undertaking the elective term in the nominated country, being at a sufficiently advanced stage in their training to make meaningful contributions, willingness to work in rural environments, and resourcefulness in overcoming challenges. Recipients are required to submit an elective report upon completion and may be invited to present their experiences to prospective students.
