The Peter Dempsey Award In Applied Psychology

The Peter Dempsey Award in Applied Psychology was established to honor Rev. Professor Peter Dempsey, OFM, Cap., who retired from the Chair of Applied Psychology in 1982 after thirty-one years at University College Cork. Professor Dempsey successfully brought Applied Psychology to a position of eminence in UCC and Ireland as its first Professor of Applied Psychology. Former students and colleagues established this award to permanently mark his work and enable students to pursue postgraduate studies in Applied Psychology. The award is made annually by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the full-time teaching staff of the School of Applied Psychology, in consultation with the Head of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, the Head of College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, and the External Examiner. The competition is confined to students pursuing the final year of the honours programme for BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) Degree Examinations or the Higher Diploma in Psychology who have passed all previous examinations in the relevant College/Faculty in the minimum time. The award consists of a monetary prize and a parchment certificate. It is funded from endowments invested by the University, with the annual income available for the award. Due to fluctuation in the investment market, the value may vary from year to year. The current value of the award is approximately €1,000.
