The Seán Ó Riada Memorial Prize

The Seán Ó Riada Memorial Prize is an annual award established by colleagues of the late Seán Ó Riada, who was a member of staff in the Department of Music at University College Cork from 1963 to 1971. The prize is funded from an endowment of €508 subscribed by his colleagues. The award recognizes exceptional achievement in Irish Traditional Music studies at University College Cork. The prize is awarded to the candidate in the BMus (Honours) Degree Examination who demonstrates the deepest understanding of the nature of Irish Traditional Music, either at an academic level, performance level, or both. The successful candidate must have attended UCC for four years immediately preceding the examination and must be presenting for the BMus Honours Degree Examination for the first time. The prize value is approximately €400, though this amount may vary from year to year due to fluctuations in the investment market where the endowment funds are held. Recipients must achieve a sufficiently high standard as determined by the Academic Council and meet specific eligibility criteria related to their academic progression and examination timeline.
