About this opportunity
The Thomas Henry Coulson Scholarship is an undergraduate scholarship providing $5,500 in financial support to students studying English who are experiencing disadvantage or hardship. The scholarship is available to second, third, or fourth year undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney who are majoring in English.
Established in 2020, this scholarship is funded by a donation made in 1916 from Miss Mary Jane Coulson in memory of her brother. It aims to support students facing various forms of disadvantage including Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students, those from low socio-economic backgrounds, students with carer or sole-parent responsibilities, students with long-term medical conditions or disabilities, those from regional or remote areas, refugees, LGBTIQ+ students, and first-in-family students.
The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and a personal statement demonstrating why the student is studying English, their commitment to the field, and the impact financial hardship has on their studies. Full-time recipients receive $5,500 per annum for up to one year, while part-time students receive 50% of the full-time rate for up to two years, paid in two equal installments after the census date of each semester.
