About this opportunity
The Thomas and Ethel Mary Ewing Scholarships support postgraduate research students who need to travel to assist in their research in education. This scholarship was established in 1964 from a bequest by Dr Thomas Ewing. The scholarship provides financial support to master's by research or PhD students enrolled in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work who demonstrate a need to undertake travel overseas, interstate, or outside Sydney as part of their degree. Recipients must be graduands or graduates of the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney and undertake research in the field of education.
The scholarship provides a stipend of $45,000 per annum for full-time students, with part-time students receiving 50% of the full-time rate. International students also receive academic course fees covered for the duration of their candidature. PhD recipients can receive funding for up to three years with a possible six-month extension, while master's by research recipients receive funding for up to two years (or 1.75 years for those who commenced on or after January 1, 2019). Selection is based on academic merit, area of study, research proposal, curriculum vitae, detailed proposed budget and itinerary, publications, a letter of reference from a supervisor, and a personal statement demonstrating the need for travel and its importance to the applicant's research.
The scholarship is offered subject to availability of funding, in rotation with Thomas and Ethel Mary Ewing Scholarships in Medicine. Recipients are required to maintain receipts for costs incurred and provide annual reports on their research work to the Associate Dean (Research Education). The scholarship cannot be held concurrently with alternative primary stipend and/or tuition fee scholarships of higher value.
