About this opportunity

This grant program supports trails with high visitor numbers and significant international tourism. The program aims to address challenges related to high visitor volumes such as trail degradation, waste management, safety, and emergency preparedness while preserving natural values, recreational access rights (allemannsretten), and cultural heritage. Funding prioritizes comprehensive visitor management planning, collaboration between tourism operators, volunteers, municipalities, and conservation authorities. Projects must demonstrate holistic long-term planning with thorough assessments of environmental impacts. The program also supports an authorization scheme for National Tourist Trails, though authorization is not required to receive funding. Supported activities include project management and planning related to visitor management, trail maintenance and marking, emergency shelters, access zone development, sanitation facilities, waste management, information initiatives including mountain watch services and trail patrols. All measures must be within the framework of traditional Norwegian outdoor recreation rights and minimize environmental impact.
